Help - Searching the Wisconsin.gov Website

Search Tips
Are you having trouble searching the site or finding the information you need? Use the tips below to improve your search results and get access to the Wisconsin state government information you are looking for.

When you're looking for something specific, try to be as exact as possible with your search terms. For example, if you're looking for sites on Department of Natural Resources, type in " Department of Natural Resources ", instead of "Wisconsin State Agencies". Please note that words are case sensitive when using our Search engine. If you type in your query in all lower case, it will search for any combination of case. However, if any part of your query is upper case, it will search for exact, case-sensitive matches.

If you can't find the information you're looking for Go to our Frequently Asked Questions or let us know what you're trying to find through our Feedback form.

Search by Keyword - On all of the Wisconsin.gov pages you will find a Search Box in the upper left corner. This is where you can quickly locate information by typing in a word or phrase. For example: if you type in taxes, then click Go (or hit your Enter key), you will get a listing of all the pages that have the word taxes within them. This is referred to as a simple search.

Search by Phrase - Using a specific phrase is a way to narrow your search. Use the Search Box, located in the upper left corner. Use quotation marks; for example: type "income tax". This will result in a listing of pages / sites that have this exact phrase. Another way to link words together is by using the + sign, for example: type wisconsin + income + tax. The search engine will look for all three words and your results will become more defined.

Search Results
The results page will let you know how many matches were found and will rate them with percentages, with 100% finding an exact match to a specific query. Don't worry if you end up with a large number of results because the most relevant content will be listed first. If you find that your search results are not relevant or too broad, go back and add some more specific terms. The same is true if you do not get any results; you might have been too specific. Go back and try some broad words to define your search.
